The more nitrogen (N) that is excreted by dairy cows in urine, the greater the environmental risks from undesirable N losses to air and water. This fact sheet highlights one of the main strategies to increase nitrogen use efficiency and reduce nitrogen loss through urine excretion by reducing the ingestion of crude protein, which must be done with caution to avoid underfeeding (9 pages; 2018).
