Using cover crops following corn silage harvest and manure application provides an excellent way to reduce erosion, build soil health, and trap nitrate that may otherwise leach into groundwater. However, in Wisconsin there are trade-offs between cover crop growth and agronomic and nutrient management. Since cover crops require extra field work in the fall and spring, farmers must be aware of these trade-offs and utilize best management practices to prevent economic loss (4 pages; 2019).
