Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a widely accepted methodology used to estimate the potential environmental impacts of producing goods and services. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines LCA as "the compilation and evaluation of the inputs, outputs, and the potential environmental impacts of a product system throughout its life cycle" (ISO 2006).

This fact sheet summarizes the results of an LCA on GHG emissions from dairy operations in the Great Lakes Region of the United States (10 pages; 2018).
