Animal agricultural operations are a major contributor to ammonia emissions. Manure management is crucial to manage and mitigate these emissions. A model was built to estimate ammonia emissions from archetypical manure management practices in conventional, organic, and grazing dairy farms in Wisconsin. This document presents changes in ammonia emissions after evaluating alternative manure management practices including diet modifications, changes to manure storage and application, and additional manure processing. Crude protein reduction, manure injection (or incorporation), and a combination of solid-liquid separation and manure injection are the practices that can effectively reduce ammonia emissions (5 pages; 2023).
