Author(s) Scott Craven, David Drake.

In this, the eighth publication in the Living with Wildlife in Wisconsin series, the authors describe the life, habits, and habitat of the seven most common woodpeckers in Wisconsin. They suggest nonlethal ways of mitigating the damage that woodpeckers may cause, including such ploys as hanging up mesh to prevent them from landing on buildings, frightening them with noises, and wrapping trees in wire mesh. They point out that all woodpeckers in Wisconsin are considered nongame species and are protected by both state and federal laws and that killing a woodpecker without a permit from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service will result in a stiff fine (8 pages; 2012).
