Onion smut can be a serious disease of onions, leeks, and shallots. The disease is caused by the fungi Urocystis cepulae and U. colchici and infects plants only as seedlings, killing them early on or leaving them in a weakened vegetative state for the rest of the growing season.

This fact sheet shows you how to identify, prevent, and control this onion disorder in your home garden (2 pages; 2004).
