Potato virus Y (PVY) is an aphid-transmitted virus that for decades has caused disease and damage in potato crops in Wisconsin and elsewhere. On the whole, the disease has been successfully controlled. But new virus strains that cause few visible symptoms in certain potato varieties have made it necessary for farmers to deploy new tactics to keep PVY infections at tolerable levels. The authors present a detailed description of the disease, its symptoms, and its history in Wisconsin. They suggest a number of management techniques to limit its spread in Wisconsin potato fields (8 pages; 2011).
