The People Came First: A History of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension was written by historian, storyteller, and former Extension county agent and specialist Jerry Apps. Apps tells the story of the early history of the University of Wisconsin and agricultural education in the state, focusing on the beginning years of Extension and the growth, expansion, and change that followed.
The Cooperative Extension story is about people-those who teach and those who learn, country people and urban folks. It is a story that goes back more than a hundred years. The story is about County Extension offices located throughout the state, the staff who work in these offices, and the Extension specialists on the University of Wisconsin campuses. The story, too, is about public and private partners that assist Extension in improving the lives of people and making Wisconsin a better place to live (300 pages; 2002).
